Getting a good night’s sleep is essential to staying happy and healthy.

When buying a mattress it can be hard to know where to start and what is right for you.
There is a lot of things to consider; the cost, the size, the material, etc. and you’ll want to make sure your chosen mattress is worth the investment before you buy.

So, here at Caffreys Furniture we have put together a guide to help you pick the mattress that suits you!

WHY BUY A NEW MATTRESS

The main reason to purchase a new mattress is because the current one has become uncomfortable.
This will happen over a long period time, as the interior supports wear down. The age of your mattress can determine whether or not you need a new one.

A general rule would be to replace your mattress every 6-8 years, this is a good benchmark but it may vary depending on your type of mattress.

SIZE

The first thing you need to decide before you make a new purchase, is what size you need by measuring the current mattress (not the bed frame). See our diagram above for standard dimensions.

You will need to ensure that your new mattress can fit into you home - making sure that hallways, stairs, door frames etc are high and wide enough to accommodate the delivery.

MATTRESS FIRMNESS

How firm your mattress is will affect how well you sleep. The type of firmness you need will depend on your sleeping position, height and weight. Here we explain what level of firmness is best for what type of sleeper.

SOFT:    Side sleepers or those who change positions during the night are best suited to soft mattresses. This is because the way you sleep already relieves pressure from your spine so you want your mattress to mould to your body’s natural position.

MEDIUM SOFT:    This is ideal for those who change their sleeping position during the night, as it will still mould to your body position but provide a little more support.

MEDIUM FIRM:    This is best for people who sleep on their back as you require extra lower-back support, which this type of firmness offers.

FIRM:    This type of mattress is ideal for those who sleep on their front, are over 15 stone or suffer from back pain. This is because it will keep your back in a relatively comfortable and stable position without allowing you to sink into it as you sleep, which can cause lower-back pain.

RECOMMENDED TYPES OF MATTRESSES

OPEN COIL MATTRESS: This mattress contains one long piece of metal wire coiled into numerous springs. There’s also an additional border rod or wire to maintain shape and provide structure. It’s a great value for money option, although sides are machine-stitched rather than hand-stitched, but they are lighter than other models, making them easy to turn. They tend to be less supportive than other mattresses too, so are most suited to guest bedrooms or as children’s beds, where they are used occasionally or will need to be replaced regularly anyway.

POCKET SPRING MATTRESS: This mattress is made from individual pocket springs. Each pocket spring is enclosed within its own fabric pocket. These springs are small in diameter, made from 16-17 gauge wire, and are parallel- or barrel-shaped. The rows of springs are then clipped, tied or glued together. Working independently from each other, each spring reacts only to the pressure applied to that area. This results in a greater level of personalised support and response for each person sleeping on the mattress.
